Are you looking to add a touch of rustic elegance to your office space? Michael’s latest DIY project showcases how fitted shelves with a charming rustic oak finish can completely transform an area. Immerse yourself in the world of DIY and get inspired to create your own tailored space with these step-by-step insights.

Building the perfect office addition

Starting with a precise sketch to ensure each shelf would fit impeccably into its designated spot, Michael embarked on a journey to elevate his office’s aesthetic and functionality. As seen in the photographs, the shelves are crafted with meticulous attention to detail, using Timber board Oak rustic, 26 mm in thickness —a material both robust and visually stunning. The wood was precisely sawn by OPMAATZAGEN.nl to meet the required dimensions.

Why rustic oak makes a difference

The colour of the shelves, a rich and warm oak tone, adds an inviting atmosphere to the office. Their placement against a crisp white wall not only enhances the wood’s natural beauty but also creates a striking contrast. The shelves’ unique built-in design allows them to blend seamlessly with the office structure, maximizing space efficiency and contributing to a tidy, well-organized environment.

A style that speaks volumes

The project is indeed a finished piece, characterized by a style that is timelessly rustic yet modern. These fitted shelves offer a bespoke solution for storage and display, highlighting Michael's flair for combining practicality with visual appeal.

Beyond beauty, crafting your own fitted shelves like Michael’s project boasts numerous advantages. Tailoring the dimensions and materials to your specific needs provides an unmatched level of personalization. Step by step guide

Preparation

  • During the renovation of our old house, we had a very large fireplace installed on the 1st floor, needing a support structure underneath on the ground floor. This structure composed two walls with about 90cm gap between. We decided to use this structure as a shelving unit, and thus the question was how to make shelves to fit inside. Since the structure was not perfectly square, I needed to measure precisely each shelf position, and then would normally need to go to a hardware store and buy pieces of wood which I'd then have to cut to size, precisely. Another option would have been to order large (2m x 60cm) pieces of wood to be delivered, but I'd still have to cut each shelf precisely. Fortunately I found the 'ToSize' website which enabled me to order the four pieces of wood, rustic oak, 26 mm, cut exactly to the sizes I needed.

Montage

  • ToSize also enable to get the 'off-cut' pieces of wood delivered, so I decide to ask for these so to make the shelf support rails. The wood was delivered 1 week earlier than was expected, which was great. I oiled and waxed the shelves and supports, giving a very nice colour and finish.

Finish

  • Everything fit exactly according to plan, providing a very professional shelving unit. Thanks to ToSize, I was able to do most of the work 'online' and have delivered to my door. All I had to do was to apply a finish to the wood and install. Overall this probably saved me many weeks of work and effort, and at probably 1/2 the price of if I had employed a professional carpenter to build for me.
