Wooden shelves provide a kitchen with extra storage space and an instant warmer look. This entirely self-made project by Michel demonstrates this beautifully. Using custom-cut wood from OPMAATZAGEN.nl, he created multiple kitchen shelves that align with the available wall space. This creates room above the counter for coffee cups, storage tins, plants, and artwork, without the need for upper cabinets.

Lighting under the shelves

Slender light bars are visible under various shelves. They illuminate the worktop and beautifully highlight the texture of the tiled wall. The combination of lighting under the shelves and a small lamp above demonstrates that practical kitchen lighting can also add atmosphere.

Make it yourself with custom-made wood

Michel realized the project himself; OPMAATZAGEN.nl took care of cutting the wood to size. This is particularly useful with multiple shelves: you can tailor the length and depth to your kitchen for each location. After all, a short shelf above the coffee corner requires different dimensions than a long shelf next to the extractor hood.

When you make kitchen shelves yourself, you determine not only the dimensions but also the material and the desired finish. Furthermore, you can control your budget by consciously choosing how many shelves to make and which finish and fastening method to use. With pre-cut wood, you can focus on the final finishing and assembly at home.

Measure each spot individually and use a spirit level to check that your mounting line is straight. Choose mounting hardware that matches your wall and check where pipes and electrical cables run before drilling. For shelves near the hob, take into account the prescribed clearance specified in the manuals for your hob and extractor hood.

Finish wooden shelves in the kitchen with a product suitable for the application and follow the application instructions. Include the edges and ends as well. This makes the surface easier to keep clean and helps protect the wood against moisture and stains.

Warm industrial style

The overall result has a warm industrial look. The dark tiles, black frames, and sleek extractor hood form a robust base, while the exposed wood, flowers, and plants provide softness. By combining art and everyday objects, you don't end up with a bare storage wall, but a personal kitchen where you enjoy spending time.

The wood used: Timberboard Pine light

For this project, Michel used Timberboard Pine light. This pine wood has a recognizable grain and characteristic knots, which make it easy to add a natural look. Spruce sands and works well and offers various finishing options, for example with a suitable oil, stain, or lacquer. This allows you to match the look to your own kitchen.
