Integrating a desk with a TOSIZE Furniture cabinet

A much-requested option is to integrate a desk into a cabinet. And we get it! How practical is it if you can create an extra corner in the living room to work. Or to furnish the study practically and stylishly with a desk with storage space in the form of a cabinet. There are many possibilities, but integrating a desk into a TOSIZE Furniture cabinet  does require some DIY work.

In this article, we explain the ways in which you can achieve this:

What is the TOSIZE Furniture concept?

With TOSIZE Furniture you can easily design your own made-to-measure cabinet online. You determine the dimensions, layout and finish, and we will deliver your cupboard to your home as a smart kit. Thanks to the clear manual, you can easily assemble the cupboard yourself.

Our concept offers a lot of freedom, but works within a number of fixed frameworks. For example, we are regularly asked whether it is possible to integrate a desk into a cabinet. This is certainly possible - although it requires some extra creativity and a bit of handy work.

For tailor-made solutions like this, combine the cupboard with our sawing service. This makes it easy to order separately sawn sheet material in the same material and finish as your cupboard. Think of a desktop, an extra leg or connecting panels. We cut everything accurately to size and finish the edges if you wish - you then take care of the assembly yourself.

A desk at the side of the cabinet

The simplest way to integrate a desk is to attach a desktop to the side of your cabinet. To do this, you will need two separate panels: one as a desktop and possibly one as a leg.

Pay attention to the right support: use wall supports or an extra leg in the middle to prevent sagging.
Tip: you can match the height of your desk to the height of the cabinet. The dimensions displayed in the configurator are always interior dimensions, so add the shelf thickness for the correct working height.

Below are some examples of how others have done it:

A desk perpendicular to the cabinet in a corner arrangement

Want to make a corner arrangement? Then place the desktop at right angles to the front of your cabinet. Again, you can use a loose shelf that supports in a compartment or is attached to the cabinet side.

As with the previous option, good support is important to prevent sagging. Check the measurements of your cupboard and desktop carefully beforehand.

Now it gets a bit more challenging! It seems attractive to make a compartment big enough for a seat, but unfortunately it is not technically possible to omit the lower beam of the cabinet. This one is essential for the cabinet's stability. So how can you do this? In several ways! You can order two cabinets and put a shelf between them, as Ellen did. Hugo took a different approach and made the desk on the side by ordering two separate panels and two cabinets. Henry made a fold-out desk, so it doesn't matter that the bottom beam is just mounted, and Edgar used loose sheet material to fill the space between two cabinets so it looks like a big cabinet. He even made another sliding door for it. How creative!

Creating a stand-alone desk

Prefer a loose desk, but fully customised? Then design two cabinets yourself via TOSIZE Furniture and place a desktop on top. This way, you create a made-to-measure desk with storage space. Of course, make sure it is well supported and attached to the cabinets, so it becomes a whole and doesn't just shift. For a sleek finish, you can leave out the top beams of the cabinets and copy the drill holes in the top. Marcel has been even more creative and mounted a cupboard under and above the leaf on one side, and a table leg on the other side. So it is clear: if you are a bit creative and handy yourself, a lot is possible!
