Edward designed this entirely themselves: from cutlist to finish. Get inspired by the materials used below — and then think about how you would tackle it. We make sure the wood is accurate to the millimetre; the rest is up to you.

A handmade street sign with a colourful welcome

Fancy making an outdoor sign that feels as personal as the shop behind it? Edward made this A-frame street sign entirely himself, using wood cut to size by OPMAATZAGEN.nl. Created for The Green Basket, it combines a warm brown timber frame, bold lettering and a hand-painted fruit basket. You get a practical pavement sign with plenty of character, rather than an off-the-shelf display.

From a paper drawing to a painted sign

A carefully planned layout

In the workshop photos, you can follow the design from a full-size paper drawing to two matching black panels. The drawing includes the shop name, a woven basket filled with fruit, two hand motifs near the top and a decorative border. Pale dotted outlines on the black panels map out the lettering and illustration before painting. With this approach, you can plan the spacing across the whole sign before filling in the colours.

Traditional sign painting in bright colours

The finished panels feature large cream-yellow serif letters spelling out ‘The Green Basket’, with green offset shadows that give the words depth. In the centre, you see yellow bananas, red strawberries and purple grapes with green leaves, all sitting in a brown woven basket. Fine highlights bring out the basket weave and fruit details. A slim green border with inward-curving corners frames the design, while small green flourishes separate the illustration from the text below.

The smaller lines read ‘Fresh Herbs & Spices’, ‘Cold Drinks’ and ‘Fruit & Veg’. Their light colour contrasts clearly with the black background. You can also see brushes and a palette with green and cream-yellow paint in the progress photos: a lovely glimpse of the hands-on sign painting behind the finished result.

How the wooden A-frame is built

Two rectangular framed panels form the folding A-frame. The broad timber surrounds have a warm brown finish, with visible grain and knots. Angled joints meet at the upper corners, and the upright frame members extend below the bottom rails to create short feet. The finished painted faces have a noticeable glossy sheen.

In the side view, you can see hinges at the top and a metal chain connecting the two halves. The hinges let you fold the sign, while the chain limits how far it opens. If you make a similar design, plan the position of these fittings before assembly and pre-drill screw holes to help prevent the timber from splitting.

An outdoor sign that belongs beside fresh produce

The finished street sign stands on grey paving outside the shop, next to displays of grapes, strawberries and other fresh produce. Its painted fruit basket echoes the real products beside it, so you immediately understand what the shop offers. Against the grey pavement and dark shopfront, the yellow lettering and colourful illustration stand out beautifully.

For your own pavement display, leave a clear route for pedestrians and check local rules before putting a sign outside. Fold it away and bring it indoors in wet or windy weather, especially when using a moisture-sensitive panel material.

Cut-to-size wood, with the creative work left to you

MDF Natural supplied the wood cut to Edward’s chosen dimensions. Edward then made, painted and assembled the project himself. Starting with accurately sized pieces lets you concentrate on the layout, surface preparation, frame and hand-painted details, rather than cutting large sheets yourself.

Making your own A-frame gives you freedom over the panel size, frame proportions, materials and colour palette. You can adapt the design to your entrance and choose where to spend your budget. Cut-to-size ordering also helps you plan the pieces you need, although your final cost will depend on the materials, fittings and finishes you choose.

Traditional shopfront style

If you love the welcoming feel of an old-fashioned greengrocer, this traditional shopfront style is full of inspiration. The painted serif lettering, decorative flourishes and rich fruit colours give you that familiar neighbourhood-shop atmosphere. The visible timber grain adds warmth, while the crisp green outline keeps the detailed design neatly contained.

Material choice: MDF Natural

MDF Natural, used for the sign panels, is an engineered wood-fibre board with a smooth, even surface and no visible grain. That makes it a useful base for detailed traditional sign painting: you can create clean letter edges, fine lines and broad areas of colour without a grain pattern showing through. It is also easy to prepare and offers a budget-friendly starting point for a painted project.

For your own version, lightly sand and remove dust before applying a compatible MDF primer, paying particular attention to the absorbent cut edges. Follow the coating manufacturer’s drying instructions between layers. Standard MDF Natural is intended for dry interior conditions, not permanent outdoor exposure; paint does not make it waterproof. For regular outdoor use, choose a panel specifically rated for that environment. If you use MDF Natural for a temporary display, keep it dry and store it indoors.
