A Smart Solution for Extra Storage Space
Want to make the most of that empty space under your stairs? Get inspired by Wilma's fantastic DIY project: a pull-out stair cupboard with handy shelves, perfect for all your kitchen essentials.
The Materials Used and The Design
This project is beautifully constructed with MDF Natural, which is not only durable but also easy to work with. The cabinet has a sleek, modern design with a beveled finish that seamlessly complements the shape of the staircase. The subtle handle allows you to easily slide out the cabinet, creating a wealth of extra space.
Placement and Functional Benefits
The under-stairs cupboard is located in the living room, directly under the stairs. This location is ideal because it makes efficient use of otherwise often unused space. The cupboard offers three spacious shelves where you can neatly organize your supplies. Whether it's cans, rice, or spices, everything has a place.
Unique Design and OPMAATZAGEN.nl
What makes this design unique is the slide-out function. This allows you to easily reach even the back shelf without bending over. Having the MDF Natural custom-cut by OPMAATZAGEN.nl ensured that Wilma's cabinet fit perfectly, without gaps or seams. Customization at its finest!
Scandinavian Style
The cabinet exudes simplicity and functionality, hallmarks of Scandinavian style. The clean lines and neutral colors give it a fresh and timeless look.
The Benefits of MDF Natural
MDF Natural is a versatile material choice because of its smooth surface, making it ideal for painting. It's a sturdy sheet material that's easy to work with, perfect for DIY projects like this one.
DIY Tips for Success

Step by step guide
Preparation
- 1. Determine which casters you'll install under the cabinet. These will determine the overall height and therefore the cabinet's dimensions. 2. Determine the depth of the shelves. My cabinet is 75 cm wide. Because 30 cm seemed sufficient for shoes, I chose shelves with a depth of 30 cm for the shoe side and 43 cm for the storage side.
Montage
- Mount the wheels under the bottom board and build the cabinet above them. I used angle connectors between the bottom board and the vertical panels for extra strength, making it invisible from the outside. Then, insert the shelves into the cabinet using shelf supports.
Finish
- For MDF I chose a primer and then lacquer in the correct color.
